Reclaiming My Mental Health Through Self-Care

In today’s fast-paced world, taking care of ourselves can often take a back seat to the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities. As someone who has dealt with mental health challenges, I came to realize that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining my mental well-being. Through trial and error, I have learned that self-care is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and what works for one person may not work for another. However, I have listed below some of the self-care practices I use to help me in my journey of reclaiming my mental health.

1. Making Time for Myself

One of the most important aspects of self-care for me has been setting aside time for myself. I found that when I was constantly working or taking care of others, I quickly became burnt out. It’s important to find a balance between responsibilities and leisure time. I now schedule time in my calendar each day for activities I enjoy, like reading or practicing yoga. I also make sure to stick to these activities, even if it means saying “no” to other responsibilities or social invitations.

2. Mindful Meditation

Mindfulness meditation has been an incredibly helpful tool in managing my anxiety and depression. There are countless apps, videos, and articles that can teach you how to practice mindfulness meditation, but at its core, it’s about being present in the moment and observing your thoughts non-judgmentally. Through consistent practice, I’ve found that mindfulness has helped me become less reactive to my thoughts and emotions. It has also helped me to develop a greater sense of self-awareness, which is essential for recognizing when I’m feeling burnt out or overwhelmed.

3. Regular Exercise

Exercise is another essential component of my self-care routine. Physical activity has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. For me, exercise has been a way to relieve tension and anxiety, as well as a way to boost my mood. I make sure to incorporate some form of exercise into my daily routine, whether it’s taking a brisk walk or attending a yoga class. It’s important to choose an activity you enjoy, so you’re more likely to stick with it.

4. Getting Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for mental health. When I’m sleep-deprived, my anxiety and depression tend to flare up. I make sure to prioritize getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. I’ve found that having a consistent sleep routine, like going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, helps me to fall asleep easier and wake up feeling more refreshed.

5. Seeking Professional Help

Self-care is not a substitute for professional help. If you’re struggling with mental health challenges, it’s important to seek out the help of a mental health professional. Therapy has been an essential part of my journey towards reclaiming my mental health. It’s important to find a therapist who is a good fit for you, someone who you feel comfortable talking to and who understands your unique challenges. Therapy has helped me to develop coping skills, become more self-aware, and learn how to manage my symptoms.

6. Connecting with Others

Connection with others is an important part of self-care. Humans are social creatures, and social isolation can be detrimental to mental health. I make sure to connect with friends and family regularly, whether it’s through a phone call, text message, or meeting up in person. I’ve also found comfort in support groups. Support groups provide a safe space to connect with others who are going through similar challenges.

7. Engaging in Creative Activities

Engaging in creative activities like drawing, painting, or writing has been another way I’ve found to practice self-care. Creativity has been shown to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression. When I’m engaged in a creative activity, I’m able to get lost in the process and quiet my mind. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “creative” person, there are countless ways to engage in creative activities, like coloring or knitting.

8. Reducing Screen Time

We live in a world where we’re constantly bombarded by screens, whether it’s our smartphones, computers, or televisions. While screens can provide entertainment and important information, they can also become a source of stress and anxiety. I make sure to take breaks from screens throughout the day. One way I do this is by setting aside time to read a physical book instead of scrolling through social media.

9. Eating a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet is important for both physical and mental health. I’ve found that when I eat a diet high in processed foods and sugar, my mood tends to suffer. On the other hand, when I eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, I have more energy and feel more balanced. This doesn’t mean that I never indulge in treats, but I make sure to make them the exception rather than the rule.

10. Being Gentle with Myself

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned to be gentle with myself. Mental health challenges can be incredibly difficult to deal with, and often we can be our own worst critics. I’ve learned to practice self-compassion, meaning that I treat myself with the same kindness and understanding that I would offer a loved one. This means acknowledging my strengths as well as my weaknesses, and forgiving myself when I make mistakes.

In conclusion, reclaiming my mental health through self-care has been a process of trial and error. What works for me may not work for someone else. However, I hope that by sharing some of the self-care practices that have helped me, others can find inspiration and guidance on their own journey towards mental health and well-being. Remember, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Taking care of ourselves is essential for living a healthy, fulfilling life.
