Many people make the mistake of seeking peace and happiness outside themselves when it can only be found within oneself. This is often due to the belief that acquiring material possessions, climbing the social ladder, or finding the perfect partner is the key to happiness. However, happiness and inner peace are not contingent on any external factor but rather are derived from within. The Dalai Lama reminds us of this saying, “‘Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.’” It, therefore, begs the questions, why are we seeking outside of ourselves, and what are the reasons we should stop doing so?
Here are some key reasons why we need to start seeking within ourselves for peace and happiness and stop depending on external factors:
- Inner peace is unconditional: Happiness derived externally is often conditional on acquiring certain things like a job, relationship, or accomplishment. However, this is not the case with inner peace, which can be found regardless of one’s external circumstances.
- We will never be satisfied: Dependence on external sources often signifies temporary satisfaction and disruption of inner peace. The cycle continues because we are hardwired always to want more. On the contrary, once we find inner peace, it becomes an unending sustainable and fulfilling state of being.
- We have everything we need: Often, we fail to recognize the abundance within us. Every human being has the power to control their thoughts, emotions, and actions. The understanding that happiness lies within fosters the realization that everything we need, we already possess.
Breaking the habit of seeking happiness outside oneself can be challenging. However, the rewards of finding inner peace within oneself far outweigh the risks. Here are some tips on how to find peace within oneself:
- Meditate: Meditation is an excellent tool for finding inner peace. By taking time out of a busy day to calm the mind and focus on the moment, individuals can connect with their inner selves and cultivate a peaceful state of being.
- Practice gratitude: The practice of reflecting on the things we are grateful for focuses the mind on the abundance in one’s life, thereby, lessening the desire for external factors and creating inner peace.
- Engage in self-care: To find inner peace, individuals must prioritize self-care practices, including adequate rest, exercise, and healthy eating. Focusing on caring for oneself helps to create a positive mindset, leading to inner peace and happiness.
In conclusion, inner peace and happiness are derived from within oneself. The belief that external factors can bring happiness is a fallacy. Once people realize this, they can begin to cultivate peace within themselves and experience a more fulfilling life.
